What is Scrip?
Scrip is a term that means “substitute money.” When your organization members purchase scrip, they’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates that are used just like cash. The Scrip is issued by the national and local retailers where families already shop. These merchants want to support non-profit organizations and in return ask you to support them by shopping with Scrip at their stores. Salem can use scrip to purchase food, clothing, and other everyday essentials. With each gift card used, we can earn revenue for Salem UMC.
How Scrip generates revenue for Salem
The Great Lakes Scrip center acts on behalf of churches, schools, and other non-profit organizations by purchasing large amounts of Scrip from grocery stores, department stores, gas stations, and other retailers. Because the Scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Salem buys the Scrip from Great Lakes Scrip Center, then resells the certificates to church members for regular face value. The bulk of the discount — from 2% to 15% or more — is retained by Salem as revenue.
Scrip is “shopping cart fundraising.”
The reason for the effectiveness of Scrip is simple: families produce revenue by making purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with Scrip. An organization of 150 families easily spends between $1 million to $2 million per year on food, clothing, and other essentials. If these families use Scrip for these purchases, we can raise as much as $4,000 to $14,000 per year for Salem UMC.
You can purchase Scrip every Sunday, or even during the week, since we now have several gift cards right at the church. These include BP Shell – Speedway – Marathon – Kwik Trip – Starbucks – Burger King – Chili’s – Cousin’s Subs – Culvers – Panera – Chipotle – Cracker Barrel – Red Robin – Subway – IHOP – Taco Bell – Texas Road House – Dunkin Donuts – Noodle & Company – Pizza Hut – Bristol 45 Diner – Olive Garden – Buffalo Wild Wings – Lakeside Sentry – Meijer – Gordon Food Service – Woodmans – Kohl’s – Target – Menard’s – JC Penney – Walmart – Walgreens – Bath & Body Works – Tinseltown Cinemark.
